EYES ON TRACK NEWSLETTER Welcome to the new and improved EYES ON TRACK site. The purpose of our Newsletter is to keep you informed on what we're doing, where we will be speaking, and what's new in the world of vision. We also want to know what YOU are doing, give you a forum to express your opinions, ask questions, and generally keep in touch with other concerned educators, home school parents, doctors, therapists, and parents. Please feel free to e-mail your thoughts, ideas for using the EYES ON TRACK system in your classroom, etc. Info@eyesontrack.comUPCOMING WORKSHOPS/INSERVICES: We are in the process of planning our workshops and school inservices for the school year. Please keep watching for our schedule. Diane Brown (re: Biggs Elementary School Inservice ) wrote these kind words: " We are doing exercises daily from your program. All of the children enjoy them. Thanks to you (Vicki) and Dr. Remick for the wonderful day. I have heard many teachers comment that it was the most useful and informative inservice we have ever had. That's saying a lot. Most of us have taught there for years! Thank you again for the good work you do. If there are any modifications or adjustments I can make for (my students), please let me know." The good news is that our eye tracking and visual perception games are fun! And after trying them yourself, you'll experience how powerful and effective these activities are. WHAT'S NEW
Special Olympics in Northern California June 26, 2004 Dr. Kristy M. Remick, Co-Author of Eyes On Track, will head a team of volunteers to offer complete vision screening of Special Olympics athletes. The screening will include eye health evaluation, refraction, and prescription glasses if needed. All athletes will also be receiving excellent quality sunglasses. Dr. Remick received her training for Special Olympics Healthy Eyes program in February 2003 in Mexico City and was a member of the team for the large vision screening. Special Olympics was started by Eunice Schriver and the Healthy Eyes Program is funded by Lions Clubs International.
SB 606 ; Authored by Senator John Vasconcellos Inspired by EYES ON TRACKDr. Kristy M. Remick, Publisher Jim Follis, Vicki Bedes, and Jerry Hill visited the State Capitol and talked to legislators about the alarming number of students with eye-tracking and visual perception problems in our schools and how many of these children find there way to our juvenile halls. A couple of weeks later, Dr. Remick received a telephone call from Matt Gray, Deputy Chief of Staff for Senator Vasconcellos, saying that he wants to write a bill about "Eyes On Track"! We were thrilled at the time but it has been a long learning process. As of September 2003, SB 606 has been amended numerous times but has passed the entire legislature and is just waiting for Governor Gray Davis to sign it. The bill will be to improve awareness about "near vision symptoms" among students in our public schools, and will include a checklist to be sent home to parents. SB 606 will also be informing educators about the relationship between vision and academic success and the goal is that many more students will be taken by their parents for comprehensive visual examinations. |
